Garbage tour was a success!!

Black Smoke Garbagegarage Tour

We organised a “small” tour in from our hometown and through a couple of villages, surprisingly not just home to a few Mercedeses! Starting in Kokkola 13:00 we gathered up at ABC, a local gas-station and waited until 13:45 for people to show up for the tour. Behold 11 cars had lined up at the starting point!! #maakuntakierros #letka #dailydriver #premiumgarbage A video posted by Premium Garbage (@blacksmokeracing) on Oct 29, 2016 at 3:41am PDT Kälviä – 14:00 – Herlevi Pulling Team At Herlevi, about 15 minutes from Kokkola the bus decided to spit out all of the coolant, after […]

A little info on the 2015-2016 CDI project

A little info on the 2015-2016 racecar + Teemu answers some bonus questions! The idea behind the project/Tanken bak prosjektet: The idea is the same as is has been since we started, building a car that we can compete with. When and why did you buy this car/Når kjøpte du bilen? We got this car for free winter 2012-2013 From who did you buy it/Hvem kjøpte du den av? From our sponsor Parkkila.fi, we got it for free. Was it an easy buy, or did something special happen/Hvordan foregikk handelen? No problems, we just loaded onto the trailer and drove the 100km […]

Backwoods cruising and a working engine

Big thanks to Backwoods Customs for the hospitality and an amazing event! Backwoods cruising went straight to the top5 events we have ever been part of. The greatest news are that the car is now working as it should. Developing the cdi engine has been a long and hard road. The car has not worked as it should until now and it has been very hard to drive, now Teemu is happier than ever and we cant wait to test it properly on a real track. We still have a lot of tweaks to do to make the setup safer […]

Breaking the first engine of the season

I was writing a final post about the last modifications to the new engine for this season but since we already broke it i decided to write this one first. So we already have been to two “driving” events this season, very early for us, Elmia in Jönköping Sweden and Seinäjoki in Finland. We had some problems in both races and after the practice in Seinäjoki the engine main bearings broke down. The problems in Elmia very typical new engine problems. The double turbo system makes for some complex piping and valves that can be tricky to get right before […]

Engine development

The piston

As we told you last time we have some improvements planned for next season to the CDI engine. Jesse will make a post with more technical details later but here’s a teaser about what we have planned. The first upgrade Jesse wanted to do was modifying the fuel line. He and our programmer suspected that the original flow-back design causes the fuel pressure to drop to much on lift, or too much for our use. This may cause some of the lag and unresponsiveness we experienced this season on the track. To fix this we’ll modify the fuel rail and exchange […]

Checking the CDI engine after 4 races

So as we told you last time we brought the CDI engine to Kokkolan Autohuolto so Jesse could disassemble it and check what it looked like. After opening the engine nothing seems to have completely broken. The fourth piston shoved some signs of melting. The more worrying thing was that a small part of all the piston had broken of. This isn’t either a big worry if it hasn’t broken the piston rings. We’ll remove the pistons and check the rings and cylinders to be sure nothing is broken or worn. During the winter we’ll fix up two engines and […]

Back in the Garage

Long time since the last post once again. We had a really busy end to the season first we arranged our own race Venetsia Drifting with Rengasmarket Drift Team here in Kokkola. That took up a lot of our time. After Venetsia drifting we ended our season at Gatebil Mantorp. We had plans to go to Poland also but we catched a small issue with the engine on Sunday at Mantorp and We didn’t have the time to fix it. This week Teemu and the guys finally hade some time to return to the garage. We removed the CDI engine […]

Exhaust manifold variations

Exhaust manifold variations. Version 2.

There has been some debate about different exhaust manifolds on CDI engines. Some think that longer manifold with colletor is the only way. On the other hand some say that the right way is to get a manifold that is as short as possible. Long exhaust manifold: Those who shout out for long manifold think that manifold shoud be able to flow without restrictions.  Pipes should be equal lenght and there should be a collector before the turbo. Also to exhaust pressure shoud stay low. Short exhaustmanifold: Short manifold should provide quicker boost response, with out compromising the top end […]

Software developing

Test bench

Last blog post was about improved fuel system, this time I will take a minute to talk about software modifications. Our OM648 320cdi engine is controlled by Bosch EDC16 engine control unit (ECU). Pretty much everything is controlled electronically on this system. There too many features to list that ECU controls and observes, but here is few we are especially interested in. Fuel injection timing & quantity, fuel rail pressure, engine rpm, boost pressure and drivers demand with throttle. Pretty much anything can be done with these paramethers as long as you keep the hardware up to demand. By this […]

Higher pressure and more fuel volume!

Original high pressure pump (HPP) will not be able to maintain selected pressure level if we increase the amount of fuel going it to the engine. That is why we needed to find bigger HPP. Mercedes 400cdi has one that fits our 320cdi pretty easily.  It is capable of producing bigger fuel volume at same pressure as our original pump. Roughly this HPP is 30% bigger than original. This means that we can run 30% more fuel through injectors without problems with maintaining the pressure. From the software we can adjust the pressure even higher than it originally is. 1600 bar […]

Kemora test-day

Found some leaks after the first spin.

We have already driven the car in the bench a couple of times to test the mechanical functions but the engine map is to far of the chart to get it right in the bench. Therefore we decided to go to the local race-track, Kemora, for a couple of setup-laps. The car with the current engine-map should have about 400hp. We packed the coach with some tools and the grill and headed for Kemora. The weather was perfect, sunny, warm and there was almost no snow left on the track. For the first time we got proper engine telemetry or at […]
